This work was created through a casting process using recycled aluminum. Unlike conventional cast sculpture, which reproduces an existing model, the process begins by building up plaster mold material within an empty space. Molten aluminum is then poured into cavities that emerge both intentionally and accidentally within the mold. The form is revealed only when the mold is broken away. This is not merely a transfer of form, but the very moment of the birth of an original form. Recycled aluminum, the material used in this work, once served other purposes and carried different meanings. Through melting and recasting, it is released from its previous functions and transformed into a new existence. This cycle evokes the endings and beginnings that all things inevitably undergo. The organic, fluid forms suggest a living organism generated autonomously within the mold. Their emergence is shaped not only by the artist’s intentions, but also by the interaction of material, heat, gravity, and time. Through this process, form arises from the space between control and chance. This work reconsiders the concept of reproduction in casting and explores the fundamental process through which form comes into being.

First, a negative mold of my arms was made using a sodium alginate molding material. Plaster was then poured into the mold to create plaster models of both arms. These plaster models were subsequently 3D-scanned to generate digital data of their forms. Next, within a fluid dynamics simulation, digitally generated wind of a chosen form was directed at the scanned arms to visualize the flow of air. By observing the moment when the wind struck the palms within the simulation, a specific instant was selected and captured as the basis for the artwork. Before 3D printing, the original objects that interacted with the wind, such as the arms, were digitally removed, leaving only the wind itself. This process produced an original model of the wind, shaped and transformed through its interaction with the arms. The resulting form was then cast in metal using the plaster investment casting method.

The aim of this project is to visualize and cast the invisible phenomenon of wind through digital technologies, preserving a fleeting moment of its movement as a work of art while expanding the expressive possibilities of metal casting. Entitled Fluid Casting – Casting the Wind, the project seeks to transform wind—an ever-changing fluid phenomenon that cannot be retained as a fixed model—into bronze sculptures that possess both permanence and material presence. As part of the process, parts of the human body, such as hands and arms, are 3D-scanned to create digital data. Within a fluid simulation environment, virtual wind is applied to these forms to visualize the flow of air. The original scanned objects are then removed, leaving only the generated wind patterns, which are subsequently materialized through casting. By combining contemporary digital technologies with traditional craft techniques, this project explores ways of giving form to the invisible and the intangible, transforming ephemeral phenomena into enduring works of art.

Fukiwake is a casting method in which multiple molten metals are poured into a single mold. Because the resulting patterns depend on the flow of the metals and the timing of the pours within the mold, careful planning and control are required to achieve a desired design. To simulate the Fukiwake pattern on a circular bowl-shaped form, a plaster model of the same shape at approximately half scale was first produced. The model was then 3D-scanned and reproduced using a 3D printer for simulation purposes. Specifically, water was introduced into the space between the plaster mold and a transparent 3D-printed replica, allowing the resulting patterns to be observed and evaluated. The 3D data obtained through scanning was digitally offset by 3 mm—the intended casting thickness—so that the simulation could accurately reflect the casting process. The output scale was then adjusted digitally, and the final model was produced at the intended size of the finished work, approximately 400 × 400 mm in diameter. The final casting was executed using a komagata casting process with mane (traditional molding sand) based on the printed model.

This work was created using Fukiwake, a traditional Japanese casting technique, to produce a crescent moon pattern. Fukiwake is a method in which achieving a specific pattern is inherently difficult due to the unpredictable behavior of molten metals within the mold. The work was developed with the aim of realizing an intentionally designed pattern through this challenging process. It was commissioned for installation in the entrance hall of a residential apartment building in Tokyo. Inspired by the form of a crescent moon, the cast piece was designed to emit a gentle glow, offering residents a sense of warmth, comfort, and tranquility in their daily lives.
